You know, I’ve always dreamed of going to business or marketing school. It’s been one of those big, life-long goals I kept coming back to. Everyone says that studying something like business, marketing, or IT opens all these doors to job opportunities. And honestly, coming from a literature background, that idea really stuck with me. Let’s be real—literature diplomas don’t exactly get the same respect in the job market.
Anyway, like anyone trying to figure it all out, I decided to apply to a business school. But before I hit that “submit” button, I already knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to understand marketing—like, really understand it. I didn’t just want the theory; I wanted the hands-on, practical stuff too.
So, like the internet-loving person I am, I dove into all the free content I could find—videos, articles, courses. I learned a lot! Honestly, I thought I had a pretty good grasp on marketing. But—and I think you’ll get this—it’s one thing to learn something and a whole other thing to actually do it. Watching a YouTube tutorial doesn’t exactly prepare you for the chaos of a real-world project.
Fast forward to when I finally got into the school and found an internship to match. And, well... it didn’t go how I expected. The school? Way too intense. It was all about theory—heavy, dry theory—and it didn’t click with me at all. The internship? It was at a startup, and they didn’t even have a marketing department yet. So, I couldn’t really apply any of what I’d learned, which was frustrating. My motivation? Yeah, that tanked fast.
It’s funny, though, because now I see it differently. Life’s kind of like buying a book with this amazing title. You imagine the whole story—the characters, the plot, the twists—before you even open the first page. And then, as you read, it’s nothing like what you pictured. At first, you might feel disappointed, like, “Why didn’t this book meet my expectations?” But then you realize, if the story had been exactly what you imagined, what would’ve been the point of reading it? The surprise, the lessons, the unexpected experiences—those are what make it worth it.
That’s how I see my marketing-school journey now. It didn’t meet my expectations, but the experience itself taught me so much. Sometimes, it’s not about reaching the goal you set; it’s about what you learn on the way there. And honestly? That’s even better.
